My husband and I always take the day off work and or clear our schedules as well as keep both boys home (they are both toddlers and only one in preschool) so we can spend a nice family day together. We try and let the child pick the activities for the day...go to the zoo, park, aquarium, museum, etc., within reason, so he feels special and we celebrate him and what he likes to do. He also gets to pick the type of food. We try to do the best we can to give him a special day he can enjoy with or with out a birthday party. One thing we always do is have the presents waiting in the living room for the child in the morning so they get to do that first...they love that!!! There is nothing like the excitement of a child on his birthday morning and reliving the moments with him is priceless!
The kids get to keep some candy, but the majority is left out for the Sugar Fairy who takes the candy while the children are sleeping and leaves a small toy for each child.
I keep some candy around the house (well hidden) for special treats, but I make hubby take the rest to work.
Small white board with a check list of things to do for the child that morning. Brush teeth, Brush hair, Snack, etc. Child and parent can see what has been done or not done (without all the nagging). When every-thing is checked off they can play.
In order to make my VERY EARLY mornings go smoothly for my 5 year old twins, I have a photo checklist of the things they have to do in order to get ready. If they finish with everything on the list with time to spare, they get to watch a few minutes of their favorite show before leaving. With the added motivation of "TV time" they usually work hard to get ready for school quickly (and without my help or nagging).
