Mission: The Channel Islands YMCA is a charitable organization providing programs based upon Christian principles to men, women and children of all ages, races, religious beliefs, and economic status to develop and enrich the spirit, mind and body
Since its founding in 1979, Dunn Middle School has provided 6th-8th grade students with an education that is challenging, fun, and rewarding during their "vital" years. At DMS we nurture the wonder and excitement of youth to foster the skills and character necessary for success in future academic and creative endeavors. With an average class size of 15, our students can embark upon diverse and substantive learning experiences during these critical and fruitful middle adolescent years.
DMS employs a full range of traditional and progressive teaching strategies where genuine problem solving takes the place of busy work and spoon-feeding. Long and short-term projects, cooperative learning, hands-on activities, and workshop-style learning are emphasized. In history and writer's workshops students learn the crafts of the historian and the writer from the inside out. Through inquiry and lab experiments in science and applied math tasks, students gain a degree of mastery for the discipline of each subject through hard work, trial and error and watchful mentoring.
With over 10 years of classroom experience our teachers bring a passion for learning that burns brightly. Ultimately learning is a personal matter. The superior quality of academics and enrichment at DMS stems directly from the high personal standards and inquiring minds of its teachers. Our unique community of teachers has these essential qualities:
* Effective governance: Our staff meets around one small table to make decisions.
* Academic rigor: Small classes and teacher commitment forge a bold "skills driven" curriculum.
* Extensive Arts and Enrichment: DMS offers arts and enrichment of unrivaled breadth and depth.
* Respect: Students, teachers and parents all know each other well enough expect respect and trust.
* Accountability: Students do not slip through the cracks; they are held accountable for every assignment and for their behavior on a daily basis.
* Parent involvement: Our parents are allies for the common cause of educating their children. They readily communicate their concerns and ideas and participate in the education.
Mission
The Dunn School community educates the whole student to his or her fullest potential in preparation for a life of learning and responsible leadership in society.
Core Values
In the Dunn School community, we as students, teachers, staff, parents, trustees, and friends are committed to understand and to live by the following core values:
* Moral Courage
* Academic Excellence
* Emotional Wellness
* Physical Readiness
* Social Responsibility
Curriculum
At Dunn School everything we do is considered part of our curriculum. As a college preparatory school (6-8 grade day students and 9-12 grade boarding and day students), we offer a broad program of academics, athletics, arts, community service, and outdoor leadership, within a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff. The depth and quality of the relationship between students and teachers is central to our process of education. Small class size promotes one-to-one communication and rapport between teacher and student, which best stimulates the desire to learn. Through this one-to-one communication facilitated by our advisor program, our unique personal education program and our nationally recognized Learning Strategies Program, the dedicated Dunn faculty commits to the guidance and support of the personal and academic growth of each individual entrusted to our care.
Our Commitment
Setting apart Dunn School from other educational institutions is our commitment to the total development of our students. Other independent schools may offer more AP courses or put more emphasis on superior athletic teams. At Dunn, we are committed to the principle of helping every student to succeed to accomplish our mission. We back up that commitment with
* Partnership with a trained and dedicated advisor
* Low student-to-faculty ratio and class size
* Protected study time
* Learning strategies support
* Leadership opportunities
Your Commitment
Coming to Dunn School is a big commitment for both the student and the student's family. It is a commitment to the mission and core values of the school; a commitment to being a member of the Dunn community.
